The last project from The Soft Pink Truth saw Drew Daniel transforming gnarly black metal into off-colour club tracks, an epic undertaking that he broke down for FACT in a 2014 interview.

After returning Matmos to record their forthcoming album Ultimate Care II, a concept record built from the sounds of a washing machine, Daniel also found time to go over some of his early work as The Soft Pink Truth to piece together an album of “YouTube-search-query based plunderphonic house music”, as he put it on Twitter.

The eight tracks include four 100% web-audio based compositions, strewn with gruesome monologues, homebrewed explosions and bitcrushed a cappellas, and another four unreleased tracks “which were left stranded when SPT became for all intents and purposes a cover band.”

Daniel explains: “‘Why Pay More?’ was originally created for a performance at Whartscape in 2009, in which audience members had to guess the track’s BPM in order to win a prize (a life size bust of Master Chief from the video game Halo); it has been re-edited for this release. ‘What’s A Computer?’ and ‘I Love Your Ass’ are refugees from the era of the Do You Want New Wave? album and are left untouched; ‘Fire Island of the Mind’ dates from the beginning of the Soft Pink Truth project, but has been remixed.”

Titled Why Pay More?, the album is available now as a pay-what-you-want download from Bandcamp.
