The updated version of the Technics SL-1200 turntable is expected to cost an eye-watering $4000 for a single unit.

What Hi-Fi? says that’s the figure Technics gave them when they asked how much the SL-1200G would retail for – a considerable increase on the $699 list price of a MK2 SL-1200 in 2009. You can pick up a second-hand pair of the MG5s for around £1600 on eBay.

We should probably take the figure with a pinch of salt until it’s been officially confirmed by Technics, but it’s difficult to imagine the company will be mass producing them in the same quantities as TV sets.

The new turntable comes in limited edition and non-limited flavours, and was announced at CES earlier this week. FACT has contacted Technics for confirmation of the turntable’s price.
