Koreatown artist inserts himself in classic Hollywood clips with face capture technology.

Jonathan Park, the L.A.-based rapper known as Dumbfoundead, has released a video for the song ‘Safe’ that offers a stinging commentary of the whitewashing in Hollywood and the lack of representation for Asian-Americans.

The song was written in light of the last Academy Awards ceremony, which were heavily criticised for their lack of diversity with the popular hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. On SoundCloud, Park said he “wrote this song out of frustration.”

The video for ‘Safe’, unveiled on YouTube earlier this week, takes the song’s subject matter one step further by using face capture technology to insert Park in a variety of classic Hollywood and American TV moments including Indiana Jones, Titanic, The Matrix, Full House, and Friends among many others. In between those scenes, Park plays the father role in a TV-perfect American family but eventually even that ends up being whitewashed.

The lyrics to the song can be found on SoundCloud including the excellent first line “the other night i watched the Oscars and the roster of the only yellow men were all statues / we a quarter of the population there’s a room of fuckin’ 1 percenters laughing at you.” He’s also made the clip available for download via BitTorrent.

Park also gets props for throwing in a reference to the late ODB and his now immortal “Wu-Tang is for the children!” remark at the Grammys, re-enacted on screen with his fake family.

The rapper came up through L.A.’s legendary Project Blowed scene and in recent years has collaborated with the likes of Anderson .Paak, Father, and A$AP Ferg.
