Legendary soapmaker and philosophical luminary Dr. Bronner may have left this earthly plane in 1997 but his open-minded spirit lives on in his estate’s philanthropic gestures.

As Mixmag reports, Dr. Bronner’s estate has donated $5 million to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) – currently the only organization in the world funding clinical trials of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy – in the eventual hope of getting MDMA approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Researchers from MAPS completed Phase 2 of a psychotherapy study at the end of last year with results that showed the drug can help people suffering from stress and anxiety, notably PTSD sufferers. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now authorized Phase 3 psychotherapy trials, which the $5 million donation will help fund.

Dr. Bronner’s son David Bronner said: “There is tremendous suffering and pain that the responsible integration of MDMA for treatment-resistant PTSD will alleviate and heal. To help inspire our allies to close the funding gap, my family has pledged $1 million a year for five years – $5 million total – by far our largest gift to an NGO partner to date.

A posthumous debut album by Dr. Bronner, titled Sisters & Brothers, dropped in January. Featuring spoken word recordings spanning from 1970 to 1995, the release raised money for Jail Guitar Doors, a non-profit partially founded by MC5’s Wayne Kramer to provide prison inmates with instruments and music education.
