The oft-maligned but occasionally brilliant Bauhaus are to be honoured with lavish re-issues of their first two albums. They’re due out on October 19 via Beggars Archive.

As techno DJ and Bauhaus fan Surgeon explains in a recent FACT feature, Bauhaus are generally lumped in with the goth movement, but they’re really an art-rock band who deserve to be treated with the same respect afforded their similarly chilly and tortured contemporaries Joy Division.

The band’s debut album In The Flat Field was released in 1980; peaking at number one it remained in the UK indie chart for over two years. At times the band are frankly too hysterical to take seriously, but for the most part they harness despair and desolation into a fierce, focussed and ecstatic sound.

The newly remastered Omnibus Edition of In The Flat Field includes the album restored to its original sequence plus a second disc of non-album singles and previously unreleased outtakes and alternative versions. It’s presented as a limited edition box set with the two CDs housed in Japanese-style paper sleeves, with the original vinyl cover art reproduced and accompanied by a 48-page book that chronicles the genesis of the album alongside lyrics, photographs and other visual memorabilia.

Bauhaus’s sophomore full-length was Mask, and it was released in 1981. The new Omnibus edition box-set includes the remastered original album, plus unreleased demos, alternative versions and a third disc featuring a newly mixed 1981 live show. The packaging corresponds with that of the In The Flat Field re-issue, 48-page book n’all.

Each of the Omnibus Editions is priced at a not unreasonable £15, and those who pre-order both from Beggars Archive will receive an additional and exclusive bonus disc featuring further alternative mixes and live recordings. Full tracklisting over the page.
