Unearthed, the recently minted offshoot of Peverelist’s dubstep label Punch Drunk, will this month drop its second 12″ featuring “classic Bristol soundsystem anthems of yesteryear”.

Smith & Mighty ft. Niji 40 – B-Line Fi Blow

This release, like the first (‘Bass Is Maternal’/’U Dub’), focusses on the work of Bristol producers Rob Smith and Ray Mighty (pictured above with frequent collaborator Peter D. Rose). The A-side is given over to ‘B Line Fi Blow’, a whipsmart 2-step banger featuring inspired vocals from Niji 40. Long a FACT office favourite, and previously only available – in vinyl on form – on the B-side of a !K7 10″, energy of this track is just incredible. On the flip you’ll find another 2002 cut, Rob Smith’s similarly garage-leaning solo production ‘Living In Unity’, with Gaddiel on the mic.

Both tracks have been remastered and cut loud to heavyweight 12″ for the very first time.

Smith and Mighty have been at the heart of Bristol’s music scene since the late 80s, producing Massive Attack’s debut 12″ and making breakbeat, jungle and soul music always with a heavy dubwise sensibility. Appropriately enough, Smith has gone on to become a dubstep producer of great repute, thanks to his myriad dancefloor-smashing productions under the name RSD.
