Hear Matthew Herbert reconfigure three Björk tracks

Has a new record ever come with so many accoutrements and add-ons as Björk’s Biophilia?

The 2011 “app album” album famously arrived spread over ten separate apps, each relating to or responding to themes in each of the tracks. As if this wasn’t enough, the Icelandic chanteuse then announced the Biophilia remix series, an eight-part collection of new interpretations and reruns by a host of other artists. We’re currently five instalments deep, and we’ve enjoyed contributions from the likes of Death Grips, Hudson Mohawke and Alva Noto along the way. The sixth edition arrives courtesy of Matthew Herbert, who’s done his inventive, meticulous thing on three different Biophilia tracks.

The ‘Teutonic Plates’ mix of ‘Mutual Core’ is a a surprisingly punishing exercise in scuzz’n’bass, albeit one with the sort of airier moments you’d expect from Herbert’s recent work. ‘Sacrifice’ is a more delicate, a stuttering lullaby for computers in Sleep mode. The ‘Fever’ mix of ‘Virus’ – seven minutes of coruscating algorithms – is probably the pick of the bunch.

Biophilia Remix Series VI is out now on CD, LP and digital download.
