Listen to Freddie Gibbs' new album, ESGN

Gangsta Gibbs returns with Evil Seeds Grow Naturally.

For the last few years, the Gary, Indiana rapper has been single-handedly trying to keep the spirit of 90s gangsta rap alive. His latest effort, ESGN, wasn’t due out until July 9, but after a snafu yesterday, it is out now via DJBooth; stream it below.

The 19-track LP covers familiar territory: street-born tales of drug dealing, drive-bys, and other assorted hustling. Guest verses are mainly provided by Gary-bred rappers like GI Fleezy and Hit Skrewface, although Compton’s Problem features on the icy ‘One Eighty Seven’. The production credits are highlighted by G.O.O.D. Music’s Lifted (‘Mercy’), who crafted ‘Paper’, ‘Certified Live’, and ‘The Real G Money’.

In this week’s On Record, DJ Spinn explained how Gibbs’ Madlib-produced ‘Thuggin’ “broke drown the whole mentality of our region in way I haven’t heard in a minute.” The next Gibbs-Madlib collaboration, Cocaine Piñata, is due out later this year.
