Night Slugs associate Morri$ previews sweeping new material

The “goombawave” specialist previews three sweeping tracks.

When FACT last spoke with Morri$ (aka Phil Canty), the producer hinted at crafting a “completely seamless… melting pot” of live and synthetic material. “It’s really self-indulgent in a way, but I think it resonates,” he admitted at the time. “We’re getting back to the roots, back to when melodies and progressions drove the music.”

Now, the producer (who recently relocated to Los Angeles from Kansas) has revealed the first of his “more three-dimensional” material. The soulful, Robin Thicke-sampling ‘Maison Purple’ owes as much to its titular purple sound as it does to the trap accents which he has reworked so well in the past on songs like ‘White Hood’. The similarly emotive ‘A Missed Call’ samples Drake’s ‘Cece’s Interlude’ and features a “voicemail from my mother after a particularly heated argument when I hung up on her,” he laughs.

Most impressive is ‘Breakfast At Richmans (Bronze Serenade)’, an orchestral piece that features The Mars Chamber Ensemble and was co-arranged with Feist-collaborator Mocky. Stream all three below; the material is slated for a release on his Bear Club Music Group imprint later this year.
