weeks-best-vinyl-releases021514-3

This year, we’ve brought in several new weekly features to FACT’s schedule.

Joining My Favourite Record and Forgotten Classics is The Week’s Best Vinyl Releases, a Saturday column by our friends at Soho record shop Phonica. It sounds obvious, but few people are onto great records as quickly as a great record store, and after years spent discovering gems in Phonica’s end of year lists, it made sense to give them a regular space on FACT. Every Saturday morning, they’ll run down the five vinyl records that you should grab this week.

TUSK WAX 13 12″
(Tusk Wax)

The most memorable drop in a while from Tusk Wax, Weatherall-friendly hypno-beat with a jagged acid centre. Also, we all know that a good track title is half the battle, and ‘Juno How I Feel?’ is pure class.

Waldorf 12″
(Le Disques de la Mort)

Upfront promo of the first release on Ivan Smagghe and The Ginger Prince’s new label. Sketchy machine pop, with Erol Alkan drawing for the rave hands on a piano-heavy remix.

The Return Trip Vol. 1 12″
(Blind Jacks Journey)

Not Gemini, but Jimini – luscious dream-pop and chugging house from the Lille-based producer, on neato orange vinyl. Four tracks, but Molly Knew collaboration ‘On the Road’ wins every time – it wouldn’t be amiss on the Drive soundtrack.

Karmatic Equations 2×12″
(Wild Oats)

Double-vinyl EP from Detroit’s latest favourite son, following his superb ‘Scorpio Rising’ drop on Sound Signature. Ranges from sawn-off squelch (‘4 Red’) to cavernous creepers (‘Change for Me’), but the winner has to be the opening salvo of ‘Royal Dilemma’ and ‘Royal Insanity’ – expect to hear these a lot.

Participation Mystique LP
(Deep Distance)

Deep Distance have been firing on all cylinders lately, and Harry Sumnall’s debut album as Melodein keeps up their strong run of form. Drawing from classic kosmische while looking to the modern day Kraut Krew for inspiration, it might seem like one for the heads but everyone should be able to get down with it. Drips class – both the music and the cover.
