The Week's Best Vinyl Releases

Few people are onto great records as quickly as a great record store.

After years spent discovering gems in Phonica’s end of year lists, it made sense to give them a regular space on FACT. Every Saturday morning, Phonica staff will pick out the five vinyl records you should grab this week.

IN SYNC
‘Storm/Subway Route’ 12″
(Delsin)

A throwback to the UK’s early techno heyday with Delsin’s welcome reissue of producer and DJ Lee Purkis’ finest moment, the futuristic epic ‘Storm’. Originally released on Irdial in 1992, it’s paired with another lengthy voyage in the shape of 1993’s ‘Subway Route’.

V/VM
The Death of Rave (A Partial Flashback) LP
(History Always Favours the Winners)

Leyland Kirby returns to his vast Death Of Rave project (inspired by a 2006 visit to Berghain, which he found “grim and boring”) to resurrect eight tracks for a timely vinyl release. Remastered by Matt Colton, the formerly digital tracks have now been made physical as a “document from a dead past,” says Kirby.

GEENA
Mental DJ’s Land EP
(Antinote)

A trio of gloopy, subtly warped house tracks on one of the best new labels to come out of France, backed with three different mixes of another cut by Parisian producer Geena, who’s previously appeared on William Burnett’s W.T. Records.

CHEMOTEX
Schrade Knives EP
(The Trilogy Tapes)

A wad of fierce and unforgiving lo-fi techno from New York techno mainstay and L.I.E.S. producer Marcos Cabral, who makes his debut on The Trilogy Tapes under the alias Chemotex. Excellent artwork, too.

ROMANTHONY & THE TROJAN HORSE
The House of God
(Black Male)

A well-deserved reissue of Romanthony and The Trojan Horse’s classic 1995 release on Black Male, an uplifting dance floor spiritual that mixes Muslim prayers with that old chestnut about being in “the house of God”. Engineered by ‘GOD’, naturally.
