Each week, FACT’s Mixtape Round-Up trawls through the untamed world of free mixes, radio specials and live blends so you don’t have to.

We’ve now decided to break this into two features: the week’s Best Free Mixes (think Soundcloud, Mixcloud) and the week’s Best Mixtapes (think DatPiff, LiveMixtapes). Naturally, there’ll always be some level of crossover between the two, but for now we’ve split the columns up, with Mixes running every Thursday, and Mixtapes every Friday.

For our fourth outing with the new format, we’ve got the expected hodgepodge of genres: chipper Jersey club, sizzling grime, gruesome black metal (really) and plenty more.

Mix of the Week:
SAM TIBA
SUMMER MIXTAPE

Sam Tiba’s mixes always feel like sonic workouts — in a good way. The Club Cheval party-starter is never precious with the tracks, cutting, looping and moving on to the next one with the opposite of reckless abandon: everything is meticulous and precise without feeling overwrought. Warm-blanket synth pads, Jersey club breaks and familiar R&B and rap vocals co-mingle in new and exciting ways: just wait for that bootleg of the ‘Stoner’ acapella with a Canblaster edit of a French house tune. Like that one, the mix is loaded with tracks only found in Tiba’s crates, which makes this mix that much more special.

DAG ROSENQVIST
SOUNDS OF A TIRED CITY 12

After he ditched his well-worn Jasper TX moniker, it would have been understandable to see Sweden’s Dag Rosenqvist tie up the loose ends and disappear into the Scandinavian wilderness. Thankfully that never happened, and after a gorgeous solo album earlier this year (May’s Fall into Fire), he’s now put together a frankly killer selection of tunes for the Sounds of a Tired City blog.

We don’t feature nearly enough metal here at FACT, so Dag’s selection should slake any savage thirst you might have, at least for a little while. He chops together grim cuts from Gnaw Their Tongues and Nekrosov with rough, raw classics from Ministry, Rapeman and Pitchshifter, and chunks of grizzled weirdness from Sightings, EyeHateGod and Khanate. It’s a broad, deep collection of industrial strength jammers – and to be honest the perfect antidote to the next few weeks of summer sun, beaches and frolicking. Help.

NGUZUNGUZU
THUMP MIX

The Fade to Mind pair are two of the best DJs around, and while this one isn’t as expansive as February’s Perfect Lullaby sequel it’s no less impressive. Nguzunguzu always excel at mashing up R&B vocals with unexpected instrumentals, like where Ciara’s ‘You Can Get It’ syncs perfectly with Bok Bok’s ‘Melba’s Call’. Similarly, they mix in more of the ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ sample found on 151 Feva Gang’s ‘Kush Groove’. Elsewhere, there’s MikeQ and Divoli S’vere’s remix of Kelela’s ‘The High’, a smoothed-out ‘Niggas in Paris’ remix by UKF don Donae’o, a reggaeton take on ‘Started From The Bottom’ and a new Teyana Taylor single that we missed the first time around.

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY
THE SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY RADIO SHOW

We’ve never tried to disguise our respect for London’s Southern Hospitality crew. The lads do it right, and whether it’s their regular events, their slew of mixes and releases or their excellent festival appearances, you can always count on them to root out the best of America’s plethora of fast-changing hyper local rap. It seems fitting then that they’ve finally managed to get their own radio show, and it’s hardly surprising that the podcast kicks off with bumps from Tim Westwood, BeatKing, Dizzee Rascal and Snoop Dogg – they’ve already put in the work.

As you might expect, the show boasts a selection of exactly what you should be listening to right now if you’re into rap and R&B, from Trey Songz to Sicko Mobb and everything in between. To be honest though, we’re most excited by the gang’s short hyphy mix, which sums up the short-lived (but incredibly influential) movement in a brief six tracks. If you’ve never come across hyphy before, we foresee plenty of furious Keak Da Sneak and E-40 downloading in your future.

SHRIEKIN’
BOXED MIX 002

Now he’s dropped the “Specialist” from his name, Shriekin’ seems far better primed for greatness, and he steps up to the plate to offer the second in Boxed’s ongoing mix series. As you might expect from such a prolific producer, it’s all his own tracks (who needs albums, right?) and boasts a blend of established biggies (‘Bananas’ from Boxed Vol.1 is present and correct, don’t worry) and untitled, unfinished sketches. The mix even ends with a teaser of a secret collaboration, so those of you desperate to hear what’s going on in Jack Sheehan’s Irish lair should be pleased with this comprehensive 40-minute taste.

SLICK SHOOTA
MIXPAK FM 70

Norwegian DJ-producer Slick Shoota always works at high-tempos, and this set for Mixpak is no different. A heart-palpitating mix of jungle, juke and Jersey club, the rhythms are absolutely relentless. There’s UK club heat (Murlo, Melé), Teklife dons (Rashad, Spinn, Roc, Taye), and plenty from Slick Shoota and his contemporaries (Machinedrum, DJ Marfox, SPF666); it’s also the second mix with ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ this week, but the only one that closes with some sadboy vibes courtesy of Yung Lean.
