After years spent discovering gems in Phonica’s end of year lists, it made sense to give them a regular space on FACT. Every Saturday, staff from the Soho institution will pick out the five vinyl records you should grab this week.

Arriving on Phonica’s own white label arm is the latest finely crafted collaboration from Matt Edwards and Joel Martin, offering two divergent dancefloor moods: confuzzled, dubby and jazz-tinged deepness on side A; rump-shaking heavy percussion punctuated by gloopy piano and vibraphone on side B.

The tracks collected on this album and its accompanying Part 2 (originally released as 7″s) are the result of Funky Chicken’s quest to turn over the half-forgotten trove of (Afro-)funk, soul, and Latin-tinged dance tracks made in Belgium (yes) in the early ’70s. Most of the tunes were created and recorded by session musicians, who picked up and replicated all the musical waves of the era – the result is funky-fresh and cheerful as anything.

Moscow producer OL, previously spotted on Faces, Fine Grains and Phonica, arrives on Meda Fury with a refreshingly diverse six-track that veers from throbbing, primitive “gangster house” on opening track ‘Lum Edit’ to jazzy, loved-up grooves and whistling riffs, plus a curveball with mellow hip-hop closer ‘Melt Down’.

‘You Can’t Fight It (From the film ‘Assault On Precinct 13′)’

Trinidadian Jimmy Chambers (later famous for Londonbeat’s 1991 dance hit ‘I’ve Been Thinking About You’) wrote ‘You Can’t Fight It’ for John Carpenter’s horror classic Assault On Precinct 13, but it only made it onto the Italian release of the film (Distretto 13). Appearing in remastered form on this 10″, it’s backed with a gently tweaked dance edit from Riccio.
