Manson and his creative team eschewed regular CDs in favour of PlayStation 1 discs.

Marilyn Manson’s new album The Pale Emperor has been pressed to black polycarbonate discs originally manufactured for the first generation Sony PlayStation back in 1994. The materials were sourced directly from Sony, with the hardware used for the album coming from the exact same plant as the first PlayStation discs.

The PlayStation discs are said to be thicker, tougher and more robust than regular CDs. Despite this, Manson’s team claim that the move was made purely for aesthetic reasons. A thermal texture was added to the black discs so that they turn white when spun. As the disc cools down, it returns to its original black state. The contrast between light and dark is said to reflect the themes explored on the album.

Marilyn Manson’s The Pale Emperor was released on January 15 through Manson’s own Hell, etc. label.

Last week, Sony announced plans to release of the score for 2012 PlayStation 3 game Journey on vinyl. [via NME]
