“This is music for the women of Rojava,” say the network.

Female-led electronic music and arts network female:pressure have released a Bandcamp compilation of audio/visual cut-ups for International Women’s Day 2016, with all donations going directly to Rojava’s village for women project.

The 12-track compilation, titled Music, Awareness & Solidarity w/ Rojava Revolution, has been produced to support the resistance movement taking place in the region of Rojava in northern Syria.

“With a series of music, media and sound art to listen, dance and fight to, we would like to send our love and strength to these women and spread a positive message in support of their efforts,” explain female:pressure.

The tracks were selected via an open call for submissions, with musicians being asked to place their imagination “in the service of a daily revolt against women’s oppression and the suppression of life force as such by male, capitalist militarism and its death cult.” 

The compilation features Reveller Records founder Sky Deep’s glitchy, galactic odyssey ‘Woman and the Gun,’ with dialogue from activist Hevi (‘hope’ in Kurdish), along with French-born British composer Olivia Louvel, who uses sampled sounds and re-fragmented images sourced online in an attempt to highlight the courage of women fighting on the front line against Daesh.

Formed after the collapse of Assad’s regime in 2012 by the Kurdish Democratic Party, Rojava is a thriving democratic and self-governed community inspired by the political philosophy of an American eco-anarchist. 

Women participate in all areas of decision-making in building a new society from scratch from principles of social, racial and ethnic justice, religious freedom, ecological principles and gender equality.
