Prince’s Yellow Cloud guitar also went under the hammer.

A lock of David Bowie’s hair has sold for £13,700 at an auction in LA.

The hair was taken by former Madame Tussauds’ employee Wendy Farrier who was tasked with recreating Bowie’s 1983-era haircut for his waxwork. She had kept the hair in a frame for 33 years before giving it to auction house Heritage Auctions at the weekend. The listing for the item said some of the proceeds will go to a dog and cat welfare centre in Thailand.

A signed copy of Bowie’s 1971 album Hunky Dory and the alternative full-colour sleeve artwork for his 1976 album Station To Station failed to find a bidder and can be bought for £465 and £743.50 respectively from the Heritage website.

Prince’s famous Yellow Cloud guitar was also sold at the auction for £103,000 to Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts football team.

Watch Glastonbury pay emotional tribute to Bowie with Philip Glass’s Heroes symphony.
