The film features never-before-seen footage and interviews with original Haçienda DJ Graeme Park and A Guy Called Gerald, among many more.
“Definitive acid house documentary” They Call It Acid has been 14 years in the making but it looks like the “labour of love” could be finally ready for viewing.
The official trailer for the documentary has now been released, narrated by Fingers Inc. vocalist Robert Owens and with music produced by “Evil” Eddie Richards.
They Call It Acid focuses on the birth of the rave phenomenon and the British government’s ensuing crackdown that saw a multi-million pound police unit set up to “neutralize” acid house, called “Operation Alkaline.”
The film features interviews with a number of talking heads, including Carl Cox, Larry Heard, Derrick May and contains vintage footage of illegal parties and police raids, which director George Mason spent over a decade collecting. The bulk of this was shot during the dawn of acid house in the late ‘80s and never seen before.
Gordon Mason’s They Call It Acid has been shown at film festivals worldwide and was nominated for the British Independent Film Awards but hasn’t yet been available to the public.
The film is now complete, but it currently has no release date as it is still seeking funding.
