!K7 sub-label Strut Records is set to release a collection of edits by New York remix innovator Walter Gibbons, entitled Jungle Music [via Resident Advisor].

Gibbons is a huge influence on dance music culture due to the DJing and production style that he honed throughout the ‘70s, playing at clubs like Galaxy 21 and Kool Herc’s block parties in the Bronx. Basically, he would do real time remixes by cutting between two copies of the same record.

He expanded on this approach in the studio, where he’d use a reel-to-reel tape player to extend breaks and add percussion, turning short pop songs into longer club tracks. You can see why he’s such an influence on the dominant disco edit scene today.

Jungle Music collects some of Gibbons’ strongest edits from the disco era, including reworks of Sandy Mercer, Dinosaur L and Gladys Knight and a previously unreleased mix of Arthur Russell’s timeless ‘See Through’.  It will be released on July 20.
