You’ve got to love John Maus. No, really: you’ve got to love John Maus.

The Minnesota pop deconstructionist is set to return on June 27 with a new album, We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves (that’s a shoo-in for title the of the year right there). It will be released through new label Ribbon Music in North America, and by the trusty Upset The Rhythm throughout the rest of the world.

Former Ariel Pink sideman Maus has carved out an interesting niche for himself since the release of his solo debut, Songs, in 2006,  making queasily emotive and reverb-soaked synthesizer music that seems all the more relevant in light of the world’s current obsession with minimal wave and hypnagogic pop.

We Must Become The Pitiless Censors of Ourselves – which also happens to have one of the best sleeve designs of 2011 so far – finds Maus building on the playful yet robust sound of his sophomore effort Love Is Real, offering a similar level of introspection but also capturing some of the ragged intensity and physicality of his live shows.
