The Rolling Stones have turned their hands to most things in their time: most notably music, films, books and lots of drugs.

Urinals, however, is a new one. A Rolling Stones fan museum, set to open soon in the small German town of Luechow, features the iconic Rolling Stones lips logo – designed in 1971 by graphic designer John Pasche – in urinal form, but has drawn criticism from local campaigners who claim that the urinals encourage “discrimination against women” [via the Los Angeles Times, via NME].

Roda Armbruster, a feminist who lives in the area, described the lips as “discrimination against women. If the urinals sported a tongue, it would have been acceptable because the identification with the band and Jagger would have been unmistakable. Without it, it’s a woman’s mouth, not a man’s mouth.”

The museum’s founder Ulrich Schroeder has denied that the fixtures represent a mouth of specific gender, and intends for the urinals to stay.

We’d also make the point that having a tongue modeled in the urinal probably wouldn’t be practical in terms of splash-back, but that’s a debate for another day.
