Producer/academic/label head Kode9 can add ‘film composer’ to his ever-expanding CV.

Her Ghost: An Homage to Chris Marker’s La Jetée is a joint project between Kode9, visual art collective MFO and performer Ms. Haptic (the latter appeared on Kode9’s 2006 ‘Curious’ single). The team have taken Chris Marker’s 1962 sci-fi classic La Jetée (‘The Pier’), and given it a sonic and visual overhaul. First premiered at last year’s Unsound Festival, the work has subsequently been performed at Prague’s Lunchmeat festival.

Marker’s original is constructed almost exclusively from still photographs. The narrative accommodates time travel, PTSD and nuclear fallout: a disturbed soldier from the future travels back in time to track down a shady woman from his past. Her Ghost reorganises Marker’s storyboard, placing the mystery lady at the heart of the narrative. According to Kode9 and co, the film “suggestively recasts, further complicates and asks difficult questions of its ‘parent’”. Head to the Her Ghost website for further conceptual background to the project.

The strobing trailer is available to watch below. The work is set to be performed at Montreal’s MUTEK festival in May/June: click here for more information on the line-up (including FACT’s Thursday showcase, featuring Jeff Mills, Monolake and Shackleton).
