Vampire Weekend’s Chris Baio has spoken to NME about the band’s eagerly awaited third album.

The follow-up to 2010’s Contra is “in progress now”, says the bassist, adding that “many songs” are in the bag. As for a completion date, never mind a release date, well, there isn’t one: “It’ll be done when it’s done.”

Baio was talking to promote his own debut solo EP as Baio, which is due out on May 21 via Greco Roman. Baio will appearing on the FACT stage at this year’s Lovebox festival in London, alongside the likes of Disclosure, Blones and The 2 Bears. More information here.

He’s not the only Vampire Weekend member to have been dabbling in extracurricular projects of late: frontman Ezra Koenig has been contributing to Diplo and Switch’s upcoming Major Lazer album, while keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij is working on a solo album as Rostam.

You can read the full interview with Baio in the 12 May print edition of NME, out now.
