The widely-accepted godfather of go-go music, Chuck Brown, has died.

A style of funk developed on the USA’s East Coast in the mid-to-late ’70s, go-go music has several favourite sons, but none quite as revered as Brown, who together with his band The Soul Searchers, is credited with developing many of the style’s trademarks. As you’d expect, he’s been frequently sampled by hip-hop musicians in the years since, most notably Nelly, who riffed on Brown’s classic ‘Bustin Loose’ for 2002’s ‘Hot in Herre’ – first without giving Brown any credit.

He died of pneumonia following a hospital spell that started on April 18. For more on Brown and go-go, we’d recommend the New York Times‘ comprehensive obituary. You can check out ‘Bustin Loose’ below.
