After an unusually strong run of albums in the second quarter of the year, spare a thought for those records which emerged in the first few months of 2012.

Months after the fact, Julia Holter’s sweeping Ekstasis – a bold collection of intricate pop and windswept analogue programming – still impresses. Dummy have kicked off the ‘best of 2012’ lobbying campaign with a stream of Holter’s performance at the Ekstasis launch party. Holter’s live set, recorded by dublab on April 1 in LA’s Atawater arts venue, clocks in at just over an hour, and features spirited interpretations of key tracks from both 2011’s Tragedy and Ekstasis. It’s a set that tilts from ambient drift to prim chamber-pop, and proves a worthy reminder of just how talented Holter is.
