Coachella could grow to five festival weekends

A new proposal from the festival’s promoter offers a glimpse into their future plans.

Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival promoter Goldenvoice is seeking a home for the desert extravaganza through 2030. Its contract with the city of Indio, California expires after the 2013 event, but both parties have an expressed an interest in keeping Coachella in Indio.

According to the LA Times, new documents released by Indio suggest that Goldenvoice is hoping to expand beyond their new two weekend model, staging three festival weekends in the spring and two in the fall. The proposed fall events would have maximum capacities of 99,000 and 75,000 people; the former would be about the size of Coachella’s current incarnation.

The proposal also requests capacity increases for Coachella (from 95,000 to 99,000) and its country cousin Stagecoach (from 65,000 to 75,000). The city has scheduled a meeting on September 18 to discuss the environmental repercussions of the long-term plan.

After earning $47.3 million dollars this year, Coachella is looking to expand and capitalize on the growing festival market, of which it is at the center. To that end, Coachella will launch two branded cruises this winter.
