Here’s another new joint from the most anticipated rap album of the quarter

The Just Blaze-produced ‘Compton’ is the closing track on Lamar’s forthcoming Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City, and features a guest spot from idol/mentor/label boss Dr Dre. The beat is Just Blaze to a T, full of time stretched horns, majorette drums and canned euphoria. Lamar does his pernickety, metronomic thing, and works well against the bombast. Dre’s star turn, whilst hardly his finest, gives some turbo boost to Lamar’s victory lap.

One of Lamar’s most beguiling qualities is his talent for the unexpected idiosyncrasy: check the surreal interior monologue halfway through ‘Swimming Pools (Drank)’, or the stunning “We made a right/Then then made a left, then made a right…” jag on ‘The Art Of Peer Pressure’. In this case, there’s a coruscating vocoder outro that lifts the track off into the stratosphere.

Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City has also now got a tracklist. As you can see below, the best of Lamar’s recent output appear – although, regrettably, there’s no sign of ‘Cartoon And Cereal’. Drake, Mary J. Blige and Jay Rock are among the features. [via Complex]

Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City drops on October 22 on Aftermath/Top Dawg/Interscope.
