Beck’s forthcoming sheet music album will get its maiden performance from a motley assemblage of UK indie stars.

The 108 page Song Reader, produced with kooky publishers McSweeney’s, includes 20 individual sheet music songbooks. Rather than offering audio recordings of each track, Beck has elected to give fans the opportunity to create the songs themselves from scratch using the scores. Each piece is bolstered by snazzy full colour artwork and a special hardcover carry case.

Song Reader will get its first performance on December 3 at London record spot Rough Trade East. The collection will be performed by a band created for the occasion, featuring a host of familiar faces from the UK indie scene. The Libertines’ Carl Barat is the most recognisable face, and one-time Beta Band member Steve Mason is also on board. Ed Harcourt is the nominal bandleader, and Liela Moss from The Duke Spirit will also be on hand. Stealing Sheep and Megan Washington round out the personnel list.

Song Reader drops on December 8. For those squares who prefer their albums in boring recorded audio formats, fret not – Beck also has a new album proper in the works. McSweeney’s are also behind Wayne Coyne’s forthcoming audio play, which promises to be mad as a box of frogs.
