"Is it anorexia or is it pregnancy?": Morrissey blames royal family for nurse's death

Just as sugar is sweet and Winter is cold, miserable and wet (in London, anyway), Morrissey is never going to stop being Morrissey.

The latest outburst from the ex-Smiths frontman regards the death of Jacintha Saldanha, a nurse at the King Edward VII’s Hospital who answered the now-infamous prank call from Australian radio station 2Day FM, asking to speak to Kate Middleton. The Dutchess of Cambridge – newly announced as pregnant – was undergoing treatment for morning sickness at the hospital, and after a pair of DJs from the station, Mel Grieg and Mike Christian, impersonated Queen Elizabeth II and The Prince of Wales, had the call transferred to her, revealing confidential details about her condition. In the days that followed, Saldanha was found dead of suspected suicide.

Cue Morrissey. Speaking to New Zealand’s 3News, he defended the DJs who made the call, claiming that the Royal Family and the media should shoulder the blame. “It wasn’t because of two DJs in Australia that this woman took her own life, it was the pressure around her”, Morrissey remarked, later referring to the “maximum pressure [of] the Palace and Clarence House”.

Morrissey also claims to be suspicious of the circumstances surrounding Middleton’s hospital visit. “[She] was in the hospital, as far as I could see, for absolutely no reason”, the singer continued. “She feels no shame about the death of this woman, she’s saying nothing about the death of this poor woman. The arrogance of the British royals is absolutely staggering.”

“Does she have a health condition? Is it anorexia or is it pregnancy? … I mean morning sickness already? So much hoo haw and then suddenly as bright as a button as soon as this poor woman dies she’s out of hospital? It doesn’t ring true.”
