Warp alumni Red Snapper are to re-score a classic 1970s film from Senegal.

Warp-sanctioned instrumental ensembles are ten a penny these days, but acid jazz outfit Red Snapper were just about the first live combo to make it onto the label’s books during its mid-1990s heydey. The London band put out debut LP Prince Blimey on Warp in 1996, and went on to release two more records of polyglot dub on the imprint. Their last album was 2011’s Key, released on V2 Benelux.

As The Wire report, the group have devised a new OST for Djibril Diop Mambety’s 1970s film Touki Bouki. Translated as ‘Journey Of The Hyena’, the film follows a young Senegalese couple as they scrimp and scam enough money to pay for a trip to Paris. The film was shown at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, and was subsequently restored by Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation in 2008.

Red Snapper’s new soundtrack will be performed live on April 24 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s Southbank. According to band member Rich Thair: “We are funding the whole project ourselves and are so proud of it, it’s a really interesting blend of experimental UK music and a cult African road movie.” Click here for tickets and further information.
