Women's group UltraViolet to protest at Reebok over Rick Ross's 'U.O.E.N.O.' date-rape lyric

Women’s rights group UltraViolet will today deliver a petition demanding that Reebok drop Rick Ross over his now-infamous date-rape lyric in Rocko’s ‘U.O.E.N.O.’

The song has been kicking around for over a month, but became infamous several weeks after it first dropped, when several publications picked up on a Ross lyric that describes slipping MDMA in a female’s champagne before taking her home “and enjoy[ing] that”, adding that his subject / victim “ain’t even know” on both accounts (the drugging and the, er, “enjoying”).

The lyric has been feverishly discussed by various notable figures in the hip-hop community, including Talib Kweli and writer Dream Hampton, and UltraViolet’s petition has received over 70, 000 signatures. It reads thus:

“We are appalled that Reebok would pay a spokesperson who brags about enjoying drugging and raping a woman,” said Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet. “Reebok devotes a lot of time, energy and money to marketing to women–and now they are paying a man who is literally bragging about raping us while absurdly insisting it can’t possibly be rape if he doesn’t use the word “rape.” Reebok is apparently OK promoting rape culture, but when 1 out of 5 women are the victim of an attempted or completed rape, that has consequences.”

As well as the petition, UltraViolet will also hold a protest outside Reebok’s flagship Manhattan store. Last week, Change.org requested an apology from Ross regarding the lyric, while Ross’s later attempt to clarify the line on New Orleans radio station Q93.3 hasn’t cut it for most.

Update: Ross has now one-upped that with the most half-arsed apology of all time.

Update: Inexplicably Ross felt today was the best time to put out a video for his remix of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe’… there are no words. Take a look below.
