Rare and precious news: inconspicuous sample fiends The Avalanches have unveiled a short burst of new music. 

It’s been thirteen long years since the Australian outfit released their winsome collage classic Since I Left You. After summer after summer of almost total silence, 2012 saw them issue a new mix, ‘Sleepy Bedtime Mix For Young Ones’, leak an old demo, ‘Electricity’, and drop a new collaborative track with Dave Berman for free download. Work on a sophomore LP is also reportedly well underway, with Ariel Pink, Danny Brown and Royal Trux’s Jennifer Herrema among those apparently set to contribute.

As previously outlined, the Australian outfit have signed up to contribute to the soundtrack for Australian musical King Kong, set to run in Melbourne from June onwards. The soundtrack, overseen by Marius de Vries, also contains material from Massive Attack’s 3D, Sarah McLachlan, and Justice.

As Consequence Of Sound note, a montage of clips from the show has now been upped to Youtube. The Avalanches’ contribution is a cover of Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler’s cheery ‘Get Happy’, previously interpreted by the likes of Frank Sinatra to Rufus Wainwright. The Avalanches’ take – a bombastic, pomp-laden hip-hop beat – is a mile away from anything on Since I Left You.
