East London venue The Macbeth under threat of closure

East London venue The Macbeth is under threat of closure.

The venue, located on Shoreditch’s Hoxton St, has been running for over a century and hosts a variety of live gigs and clubnights. According to The Monarch’s statement, “There has been a planning application to build a block of private flats at the back and to the side of The Macbeth. If this building goes ahead and the new residents complain about noise from our venue, we could lose our licence and be forced to close.” [via Elijah]

“For the sake of 9 residential units”, the statement continues, “we, along with the livelyhoods of all our staff, promoters and other local businesses will be under threat.” A petition to save the venue can be signed and shared here.

Earlier this year South London club Cable announced its closure due to an extension to London Bridge station, while Ministry of Sound has been publicly under threat for several years.
