Mogwai’s guitarist and singer has gathered a team of local heroes for a concert to raise awareness about the plight of a Glasgow landmark. On 27 July, Stuart Braithwaite will co-host a gig at the city’s Platform venue to draw attention to the council’s plan to remove the Sighthill Stone Circle, which was begun in 1979 by a team that included Braithwaite’s late father, but never fully completed.

Arab Strap singer Aidan Moffat, The Vaselines’ Eugene Kelly, former Delgados member Emma Pollock, Glasgow guitarist RM Hubbert, Rock Action signing Remember Remember and Kilsyth band The Twilight Sad will all perform at the gig as part of a wider campaign led by Duncan Lunan, designer of the circle.

Speaking to The Quietus, Braithwaite explained the situation: “It’s not definite, but at the moment I’d say it’s looking more bad than good, so the more pressure we can put on the council and just let them know [we] actually do care about this. Also, lots of people from the astronomical world, pagans, druids, people that just really like the space, the story of it – they mean a lot to a lot of people, so it’s just good to get the message out there.”

The gig takes place on 27 July and tickets can be bought from Platform, Tickets Scotland and Monorail in Glasgow.

Braithwaite also revealed that Mogwai have written “about thirty” songs for their new record, with a view to start recording in August. Meanwhile they’re rehearsing for their Zidane soundtrack performances in Manchester and London later this month.
