An extremely rare demo of a band called On A Friday is set to be auctioned in the UK this September. The cassette in question comprises nine tracks by the teenagers who would soon rechristen themselves Radiohead (minus Jonny Greenwood), and features six songs that have never appeared on any official releases: ‘Fragile Friend’, ‘Girl (In The Purple Dress)’, ‘Everybody Knows’, ‘Mountains (On The Move)’, ‘Lemming Trail’ and ‘Lock The Door’. The additional three tracks are alternate versions of ‘Fragile Friend’, ‘Lemming Trail’ and ‘Lock The Door’.

The demo cassette will go to auction on 14 September at Omega Auctions in Stockport, and is expected to go for at least £1,000. Auctioneer Paul Fairweather told the NME: “It has come directly from an old friend of the band who was at school with them at Abingdon School. We have copies of his school yearbook from 85/86 showing him and all four members of the band.”

A few of the tracks from the cassette have appeared on the web over the years – listen to the distinctly ’80s jangle-pop of ‘Fragile Friend’, sung by a 17-year-old Thom Yorke, below.

Yorke has been in the news lately after he and Atoms For Peace bandmate Nigel Godrich criticised Spotify as “bad for new music”.
