The soul singer’s odds collapse and only 19 (!) people have bet on Bowie.

Laura Mvula has seen her odds go from 16/1 to the 6/4, leaving Ladbrokes on the hook for a £35,000 payout if she wins, in what the bookmakers are describing as “the biggest gamble in Mercury Prize history.” Early favourite David Bowie has now fallen to third in the odds at 6/1; only 19 people have bet on The Next Day.

“Laura Mvula is on the verge of landing a monumental Mercury Prize gamble,” says Ladbrokes’ Alex Donohue. “She’s come from nowhere to become the red-hot favourite and we’re desperately hoping for an outsider to cause an upset.”

The full list of odds is below; the prize winner will be announced tomorrow. Last month, FACT assembled a (not exactly reverent) rundown of everything you need to know about the Mercury Prize shortlist, “a brackish cocktail of star names, young guns, hopeful laptop botherers and inexplicable googlies.”
