The Beatles top list of most pirated artists in the world

It’s not an enormous surprise, but The Fab Four are the world’s biggest targets for online pirates.

As Music Week report, anti-piracy monitoring company MUSO has looked at data from websites which have been compliant with takedown requests in recent years. Sites monitored by MUSO’s dashboard system, which scans websites for illegally uploaded content, include cyberlocker sites, illegal streaming services and torrents, although P2P sites like The Pirate Bay fall outside of their remit.

The Beatles are well, well ahead of the rest of the pack, with 186,687 files appearing online and an average of 1000 downloads per file. Fleetwood Mac are a distant second with 72,984 uploaded files, whilst Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin and, weirdly, Cliff Richard round out the Top 5. The Top 10 is below.

Columbia Records has announced the release of a second collection of The Beatles’ radio performances recorded at the BBC between March 1962 and June 1965. On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2 will feature 63 tracks over two discs, including 23 tracks of interviews, introductions, and studio banter, plus 40 songs.

1. The Beatles –  187687 uploaded files
2. Fleetwood Mac – 72984 uploaded files
