Listen to a 5-hour Houston rap mixtape, featuring DJ Screw, Geto Boys, Slim Thug and more

Houston Rap author mixes nearly five hours of H-town rap from 1990 to today.

Houston Rap chronicles Houston’s vibrant hip-hop scene. The book is by photographer Peter Beste and writer Lance Scott Walker, who spent 9 years documenting the scene, and profiles UGK’s Bun B (who also provides a foreword), Z-Ro, the Geto Boys’ Willie D, Lil’ Troy, and Paul Wall, with “reflections on the lives of departed legends such as DJ Screw, Pimp C, and Big Hawk.” Houston Rap is available now from Sinecure Books.

“We edited the book as a 24 hour glimpse into the culture,” says editor Johan Kugelberg. “We take you from the projects to the studio to the strip club and back, all along with an on-going oral history narrative from the people of the culture.”

To mark the release of the book, Lance Scott Walker has assembled more than 60 songs from two decades of Houston hip-hop into a four-hour, forty-eight minute tour through the city’s lean-sipping, trunk-rattling, emotionally-charged rap tradition. Stream the mix and check out the impressive tracklist below, via Spin.
