Rap quotes disguised as street signs now scattered around Los Angeles.

Jay Shells‘ Rap Quotes project is a simple idea with a brilliant execution: the artist takes rap quotes that namecheck a street location, prints them onto official looking street signs and places them at the exact location mentioned in the lyric.

The quotes first appeared in New York City around March 2013 and included lyrics from Jeru, Mos Def, Nas, CL Smooth and Kanye. Shells placed the signs around town for people to discover and, if they so wish, take home with them. Animal New York compiled most of the NYC quotes in one image and shot a mini documentary with Shells about the project.

Shells then followed things with an update in Harlem before taking the next logical step and flying the project to Los Angeles. The new mini documentary, once more shot by Animal, shows the artist putting the signs around town, discussing the differences between NYC and L.A (driving, of course), meeting a freestyling barber and wondering whether or not signs would be picked up seeing as no one really walks in L.A. It certainly redefines the meaning of a drive-by.
