Einstürzende Neubauten to premiere WWI-inspired composition 'LAMENT' in November; European tour to follow

Dates in Germany, Italy, Slovenia and the UK to come after Belgian premiere.

Industrial icons Einstürzende Neubauten are back in the studio working on a composition inspired by testimonies of prisoners of war dating from a century ago.

Titled ‘LAMENT’, the piece will have its premiere in Belgium on November 8 as part of an event called Against The Neglection: Gone West, the Fall of Diksmuide 1914-2014.

The band have been researching audio recordings of PoWs made between 1914 and 1916, now preserved in the sound archives at Humboldt University in Berlin and the Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv (German Broadcasting Archives). They’ve also consulted material from the military museum in Dresden, but “[t]his will not be a concert about World War I, but rather a composition, which crystallizes from the related themes,” notes the press release.

Two of the oldest musical forms – the lament and the motet – have also been assimilated into the composition, along with the music of the ‘Harlem Hell Fighters’, the first Afro-American combat troop, who were assigned by the US to the French High Command in World War I.

After the premiere in Diksmuide, Neubauten will take the composition to venues across Germany, Slovenia, Italy and the UK, including a date at London’s Koko on 19 November. Find out more about the project and see the full list of dates underneath.
