Moondog documentary featuring Debbie Harry, Philip Glass, John Zorn and more seeks crowdfunding

Feature-length film about the life and times of the New York street musician.

Director Holly Elson has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund her documentary about Moondog, the blind composer and poet who became an icon of New York’s underground music scene and befriended the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass and Julie Andrews.

The Viking of 6th Avenue is a feature-length film about Moondog’s life featuring reams of previously unseen archival film, home movies and rare audio recordings. Contributors includes Moondog’s friends, family, collaborators and many musicians who cite him as an influence, including Jarvis Cocker, John Zorn, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, Damon Albarn and Philip Glass. Moondog’s own voice will be used to narrate the tale, using audio culled from over 20 hours of interviews.

The filmmakers are looking for extra funding to film more interviews and license extra footage and photographs, plus they hope to bring to life several unpublished Moondog scores still in their original Braille form.

As well as seeking backers, they’re also on the hunt for more Moondog-related materials, such as photos, audio and personal stories.

Find out more in the film below or head to Kickstarter to make a pledge, with rewards including CDs, vinyl, books, portraits, trips, screenings and the like. [via Pitchfork]
