Motor City mainstay Terrence Dixon is leading an initiative to crowdfund a new club in his hometown.

Dixon’s prospective venue is named the Minimal Detroit Lounge, taking its name from a series of Detroit-centric house and techno groups that the DJ and producer originally began on Facebook. Dixon aims to provide the city’s own DJs with a proper club to play at, with the legendary Juan Atkins already confirmed as a resident DJ.

In a statement supporting the initiative, Dixon says: “Today, sadly, Detroit’s own artists have to perform abroad in order to have a career in music, because there is currently not a single club dedicated to this style of electronic music.” On Facebook, he elaborates, saying the plan is for the club to be “a pillar in Detroit for years to come … We have Juan Atkins confirmed as a resident DJ, we will bring in such acts like Thomas Fehlmann, DJ Pierre, Paul Leighton Johnson, Jeff Mills, Claude Young Jr., Richie Hawtin etc. We want to hire [longtime audio guru] Michael Fotias to build us an in-house sound system [and] we want to work with everybody in Detroit.”

An opening date for the venue has been set for May 23. You can check out the crowdfunding page here.

FACT’s Maxwell Schiano recently spent time in the Motor City to photograph some of Detroit’s most loved musicians, including Rick Wade, Andres and DJ Godfather. [via RA]
