The FlyLo collaborator sets his phasers to stun.

Los Angeles jazz composer and bandleader Kamasi Washington releases his aptly titled debut album The Epic on Brainfeeder next week.

Fans of the cosmic jazz that underpinned Cosmogramma and You’re Dead!, the two Flying Lotus albums to which Washington has lent his talents, will find more than enough to get their teeth into on the three-volume, 172-minute suite. The album features a 32-piece orchestra, a 20-person choir and Washington’s 10-piece band, The Next Step/The West Coast Get Down dipping into fusion theatrics, cool modal melodies, frisky bop, freeform wails and just about everything else in the jazz tapestry.

Stream The Epic in full on NPR.
