Chances are you signed up for Apple Music’s 90-day free trial.

The service launched on June 30, and if you managed to navigate the iOS or iTunes updates necessary to access the new streaming service you probably spent some of the summer listening to Compton or Beats 1 radio – at least until you’ve decided whether it’s any better or worse than your usual station.

The free trial is set by default to auto-renew once the 90-day period has ended, and if you signed up on day one, that period ends at 00:01 on September 30 – just hours away.

Much like those tempting free trials of Amazon Prime, when the period ends Apple will take $9.99 (or £9.99 in the UK) straight out of your account without asking – something you unfortunately agreed to when you signed up.

The best thing you can do is turn off the auto-renewal feature – if you like Apple Music enough to stick with it, it’s easy to sign up again. Here’s how.

iOS

If you’re using an iPhone or iPad, open the updated Music app and hit the profile silhouette in the top left corner.

Select ‘View Apple ID’, scroll down to the ‘Subscriptions’ section and tap ‘Manage’. Here you’ll see a button that says ‘Automatic Renewal’, currently set to on – switch that off, and you’re done.

iTunes

If you’re doing the process on the desktop version of iTunes, then click the silhouette in the top right corner of the app and select ‘Account Info’.

From here scroll down to ‘Settings’ and click on the ‘Manage’ button next to ‘Subscriptions’. In this section you’ll be able to see your current subscription plan – press the off button in the ‘Automatic Renewal’ section. Here's how to turn off your free Apple Music subscription auto-renewal
