Asif Kapadia’s acclaimed and divisive film has had the most successful debut of any UK documentary.

Amy took just over $800,000 in the UK in its opening weekend, the biggest opening for a homegrown documentary and the second-biggest documentary opening ever in the UK, behind Michael Moore’s 2004 film Fahrenheit 9/11.

The film opened in 133 cinemas across the country and will expand to over 200 this week. Amy had a limited release in the U.S. at the weekend, opening in six theatres in New York and Los Angeles to take just over $220,000 before a nationwide release this weekend.

Earlier this year the singer’s father, Mitch Winehouse, labelled the film “misleading” for its portrayal of their relationship, leading Kapadia to respond that he had “no agenda”: “It was just a question of talking to the people and seeing what the story was. It took a while for people to talk.”

Her former label boss has also revealed that he destroyed the demos recorded for Winehouse’s planned third album after her death in 2010. [via Billboard]
