Hear Brian Eno give this year’s John Peel Lecture

Eno delivers the 2015 edition of the annual music lecture .

This year’s John Peel Lecture was given by Brian Eno at BBC Maida Vale last night, with the former Roxy Music frontman examining “the ecology of culture”.

Calling for a complete rethink of what we imagine to be ‘culture’, he suggested: “Art is everything that you don’t have to do.” He offered a broad definition of artistic activity, giving examples such as dancing, cooking elaborate meals and choosing outfits.

As no one can be an expert on everything, we need ways of “keeping in sync, of remaining coherent”, he said, adding: “And I think that this is what culture is doing for us.”

You can hear the lecture now through BBC Radio 6 and afterwards check out his dig through John Peel’s archives.
