Abel Tesfaye and company allegedly sampled the score of 2013’s The Machine.

The Weeknd, his producers and his record labels have been sued for copyright infringement on his hit ‘The Hills’. The plaintiff, a film financier in the UK, alleges that ‘The Hills’ samples the score from an obscure 2013 film entitled The Machine.

Key evidence in the suit is an alleged direct message sent by producer Emmanuel Nickerson (aka Million Dollar Mano) to The Machine composer Tom Raybould that stated “I sampled your music might make it 2 the weeknd next album. Huge fan of what u did 4 the machine movie!'”

The suit claims that “both the Infringing Song and the Track [feature] synthesizer bass-lines performed with almost identical idiosyncratic sounds at the same register and using the same pitch sequence, melodic phase structure and rhythmic durations.”
