The Purple One almost sang the hook on ‘Complexion’.

Nearly a year later, we’re still getting surprised by Kendrick Lamar’s masterful To Pimp A Butterfly. Today, in a new oral history on the album from the Grammys, the rapper revealed that during the album’s sessions he spent time in the studio with Prince.

Originally, Lamar intended for Prince to sing the hook on ‘Complexion’. Rapsody reveals the plan when discussing her role on the track, which Lamar confirms. He explains that Prince loved the song and the two spent a long time talking in the studio — so much that they ran out of time to record anything.

“That’s true. Prince heard the record, loved the record and the concept of the record got us to talking,” said Lamar. “We got to a point where we were just talking in the studio and the more time that passed we realized we weren’t recording anything. We just ran out of time, it’s as simple as that.”
