“It was an oversight — but one I take full responsibility for,” says the musician.

Earlier this month, New Orleans bounce-music icon Big Freedia was charged with federal government theft for continuing to accept federal housing assistance during years that she was making too much money to qualify for it. It was a charge she didn’t deny, calling it an “oversight” due to her unfamiliarity with “a new economic structure” and one she would take full responsibility for.

Today, Freedia pleaded guilty and despite agreeing to a plea deal paying a restitution of approximately $34,800, she could still face up to 10 years in prison, the Times-Picayune reports.

“This crime is much more than an oversight,” said U.S. District Judge Lance Africk during the hearing, reminding her that the charges could reach a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
