Beat scene weekly once again expands to one-day festival this summer.
Low End Theory have announced their third annual festival will be held on Saturday July 23 at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles. The one-day event celebrates the wide range of music that informs the weekly club night and this year’s headliners are all about LET’s hip-hop roots with Wu Tang’s Ghostface Killah & Raekwon, turntablist pioneers the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and TDE producer MixedByAli.
Other names on the bill include beat scene pioneer Prefuse 73, whose importance we underscored last year in an extensive profile, Brainfeeder’s Taylor McFerrin, Sonnymoon, the duo of Kendrick Lamar-collaborator Anna Wise, and many regular LET guests and fellow L.A. artists including Daedelus, Teebs, Jonwayne, Samiyam, Dibiase, and Great Dane.
As with previous editions, the festival will also feature daytime events including production workshops and a beat invitational while local soundsystem Pure Filth provides additional sound for the multiple stages.
Earlier this month, Low End Theory celebrated their 500th weekly show with surprise sets from Tokimonsta and original resident edIT (now of The Glitch Mob). In a video celebrating the event, resident The Gaslamp Killer said “I don’t go to church and I don’t have any healthy repetitive behaviour in my life and Low End Theory has become not only my church but also a healthy routine that keeps me sane.”
Last year, FACT visited Low End Theory founder Daddy Kev at his new studio in L.A.’s Atwater Village to discuss the impact of the club night on the city. Watch our Cosmic Sound of L.A. documentary and read about Daddy Kev’s approach to sound, mixing, and mastering.
