Release Radar delivers a personalised playlist of new music every Friday.

Spotify has launched a new personalised playlist aimed at keeping listeners up to date with their most listened-to artists.

Release Radar is a weekly playlist in the vein of Spotify’s successful Discover Weekly, but instead of highlighting music you might like but haven’t heard, it delivers the new singles from artists you follow and listen to most.

Spotify already has a curated playlist called New Music Friday that delivers selected new releases each week, but Release Radar should be more aligned with individual listening habits.

The new playlist is delivered on Friday to tie in with global release day, and also offers a few tracks from new discoveries based on previous listening habits. Much like Discover Weekly, Spotify says the accuracy of the new playlist will improve the more music you listen to.

First impressions are that it seems to work reasonably well. My first playlist gave me techno from Legowelt, Voiski and John Roberts who I’ve been listening to regularly in the past few months, but the tracks selected have been available for a few weeks.

Release Radar is one of several music discovery features launched over the past year. As well as Discover Weekly, the streaming service earlier this year launched Fresh Finds, a playlist that aims to highlight under-the-rader talent before they get big.

The streaming service has also moved into video. In May the company announced the development of 12 original video series with involvement from actor Tim Robbins and Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons.
